What is Freight Density?

Freight density is the weight of a shipment per cubic foot (PCF). It’s calculated by dividing the total weight of the shipment by its total cubic footage.

Density is used to determine your NMFC freight class, which directly impacts your shipping rate. Denser freight typically ships at a lower (cheaper) class.

Why Freight Class Matters

Using the wrong freight class can result in:

  • Unexpected freight charge corrections (re-class)
  • Invoices higher than your original quote
  • Delayed releases pending inspection

Always verify freight class before booking to avoid surprises.
